Isle of Capri: from Marina Grande to Faraglioni

It is a shining diamond in front of the Sorrento peninsula, the island of Capri, one of the most famous tourist destinations since ancient times. From the emperors Octavian Augustus and Tiberius, to the celebrities of today, in this island we have always found the union of grandeur, wealth and beauty. In addition to its global reputation, in this impressive geographic area you can have beautiful walks within easy reach of everyone, both environmentally and economically.

A day in Capri

We reach the island from Molo Beverello, located inside the Naples ferry terminal. Flying dolphins and ferries depart from here every 30-45 minutes at a cost of around 40-45 euros (return). After about 1 hour we arrive at the tourist port Marina Grande on the north side of the island.

Between the restaurants in the seaside village you can reach the center of Capri using the cable car. Otherwise you walk up along the perfectly restored lanes. These perch alongside whitewashed villas and vegetable gardens, offering stunning views across the entire Gulf of Naples. The first stop on our route is the well-known square of Capri located on the hill that separates the south and north sides of the island. After a well-deserved rest on the panoramic terrace, we continue among the luxurious rooms of the center until we meet clear hiking signs showing the way to reach Faraglioni.

Continuing halfway up the eastern side of the island, you pass beautiful gardens and luxury 5-star hotels. From time to time you can see the beautiful panorama of the beaches of Marina Piccola until you reach the terrace Punta Tragara. The view opens to the crystal clear waters and on the left you can already see one of the stacks. From this point the descent to the rocky coast begins. With an altitude difference of 120m we can classify the route as type T (tourist) as it has been repeated entirely in steps. This way you will reach the swimming facilities of La Fontanella and Da Luigi at the foot of the Faraglioni.

The Faraglioni

There are four Faraglioni and they have an average height of 100 m. The rock formation that joins the coast is called Starwhile further out we find the Average Faraglionethe smaller, hence the Faraglione di Fuori, also called Scopolo. In the latter lives the famous blue lizard that probably got this color to harmonize with the nature that surrounds it. Not far from the first three is the Monk which took its name from the Monk who once frequented the island’s waters.

The best way to enjoy their beauty is to admire them from the sea. Numerous tours depart from Marina Grande that offer a boat tour of the island, passing right through the four rock formations. For those walking near the swimming facilities at the base of the stacks and not wanting to tackle the climb, there is a shuttle service that takes you to Marina Piccola.

Weekend in Capri

For those who wish to spend several days on the island, there is certainly no shortage of attractions. A visit to is not to be missed Blue Cave, the Gardens of Augustus, the Certosa di San Giacomo, Villa San Michele and Villa Jovis. You can go on an excursion to Monte Solaro or you can admire the Natural Arch which can be reached from Punta Tragara following the Pizzolungo road.

Finally you can admire a beautiful sunset from Punta Carena Lighthouse, a rocky view overlooking the always clear sea. After the Lighthouse of Genoa it is the second largest lighthouse in Italy. You can reach it from Caprile di Anacapri by going down the road with the possibility to visit the ancient fortifications used during the Second World War to defend the island. It is usually one of the quietest parts of the island, away from the main tourist routes.
